Replete Sleepy Mocktail

At Replete Wellness we prioritizing sleep over just about anything! It’s nearly impossible to experience great health, metabolic flexibility and longevity without investing into your ‘sleep bank’.

Sleep deprivation disrupts the hormones that control appetite; ghrelin (the “hunger” hormone) increases, while Leptin (the “satiety” hormone) decreases, leading to increased hunger and higher calorie intake. Even a single night of poor sleep can impair your body’s ability to use insulin efficiently, leading to higher blood sugar levels, weight gain and in increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Poor sleep also messes with your stress hormone / cortisol levels, which promotes fat storage and actively breaks down collagen, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and less elastic skin.

Instead of a nightcap this holiday season we’ll be whipping up a weekly batch of our Replete sleepy time mocktail. Tart cherry supports melatonin production & is one of the few evidence-based food sources of melatonin. We’ve also added some relaxing herbs to lower evening cortisol, plus hibiscus and cinnamon to balances blood sugar overnight to prevent one of the most common causes of prevent 2 – 4am wake ups

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 organic orange (peel included)
  • juice from 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup dried chamomile
  • 1/4 cup dried hibiscus
    • ++ note: sub dried herbs for bagged teas (2 each) if you’re not a potions master
  • 2 tbs tart cherry powder
  • optional; honey to sweeten + 0.5ml Replete Wellness zen drops or relax drops)

Instructions:

Add all of the ingredients (except honey & ‘drops’ if using) to a small pot and simmer covered on stove top over low medium for 20 – 30 minutes. Strain, add honey & ‘drops’ if using and serve 1/4 cup nightly around 30 minutes before desired bedtime to promote restful sleep. We like to drink ours over ice with an orange slice (tastes a bit like a sleepy negroni), or with a splash of sparkling water + orange or vanilla bitters.
